Sharan has been a resident of Union City for over 25 years, is a product of New Haven Unified District Schools and a graduate of James Logan High School. After finishing her education and working as a Program Manager in Silicon Valley, Sharan was driven to give back to the community and to the schools that made her who she is today. Beginning as a community organizer passionate about educational initiatives and support for under-resourced communities, Sharan ran and won a seat on the New Haven Unified School District Board of Trustees in 2016.
Since then Sharan has hit the ground running, and taken an active role in promoting student success. In just her first term, Sharan:
Spearheaded partnership with AAUW (American Association of University Women) to bring Mother Daughter STEM Discovery program to the district. Although already a fixture in Fremont Unified and other school districts for nearly 18 years, Sharan was able to bring this program to the New Haven Unified School District for the first time in 2018, and offer over 40 scholarships to girls from socioeconomically disadvantage backgrounds.
Helped introduce Spanish and Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Programs to the district to better prepare students for rigorous academic and promote cultural awareness and appreciation for diverse cultures, people and perspectives of the world.
Established two committees (Budget & Finance Committee and Communication & Advocacy Committee) and developed a culture that promotes additional transparency and welcomes student and parent involvement and participation.
Pushed to develop ongoing evaluation of security and safety measures to upgrade our campuses and keep every student safe.
Supported consolidation of vacant and underused facilities to promote better efficiency and service for our students and staff while generating additional revenues to the general fund.
And she is just getting started!
Sharan also serves on local boards and commissions representing our students and district. She is a Board Member of the New Haven Schools Foundation and the Mission Valley ROP. And recognizing the important link between City Hall and our Schools, Sharan serves as a member of the Union City General Plan Advisory Committee and the Union City Lunch Drive, dedicated to distributing free lunches and fresh produce to students and families impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Sharan’s involvement extends to community non-profits service organizations as well. Sharan is a member of the Union City Impact Club and the Sahaita Organization, which aims to educate, support, and uplift underprivileged members of our society in the developed and developing world.
Sharan has a Bachelors of Science and a Masters in Governance from the California School Board Association. Sharan and her husband Amrinder have been married for 15 years and have a beautiful daughter and a German Shepherd Dog whom they love so dearly. Together, they love to spend time with family, travel, give back to the community and always inspire to be better human beings.
